Andrei specialises in arrhythmia management with cardiac devices and catheter ablation and has been involved in many clinical trials and research in this area as well as warfarin alternatives for stroke prevention in AF.

Mr Andrew Chia is an Orthopaedic Surgeon who has specialised interest in Hip Arthroscopy for the therapeutic management of femoral-acetabular impingement, labral and ligamentum teres tears, Anterior Minimally Invasive Hip Replacements, Primary, Complex and Revision Hip and Knee Replacements and Knee Arthroscopy and Arthroscopic Knee Ligament Reconstructions.

Andrew was appointed as Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon to 3 major public hospitals in 2010 including the Alfred Hospital where he gained experience in complex reconstructions. Dedicated to patient care, he utilises the latest arthroscopic and minimally invasive techniques for the management of all hip and knee conditions; thereby facilitating the best recovery and outcome for patients from surgery.

Mr James Chiu is an Orthopaedic Surgeon with special interest in the shoulder and knee surgery.

Dr Nick Christelis is a Pain Specialist with a special interest in pain management including Spinal, lower back, ‘whiplash’ and neck pain, Sciatica and neuropathic pain and Chronic pain conditions.

Nick's positions and professional associations include International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP), Head of Acute Pain Service - Alfred Hospital and Melbourne Adjunct Senior Lecturer - Monash University.

Dr Andrew Daff graduated with honours from Monash University Medical School in 1986. Prior to commencing work as a Sports and Exercise Physician in 1990 he completed a Diploma of Anatomy, a Certificate of Sports Medicine and an appointment teaching anatomy at Stanford University (USA).

Andrew gained his Fellowship of the Australasian College of Sports Medicine in 1994 and has been on the College Examination Committee since 2000. He is also a Clinical Training Supervisor. He has a diverse practice as a full time Sports and Exercise Physician seeing patients of all ages with musculoskeletal and medical issues related to domestic, recreational and sporting activities. He has a special interest in football, cricket, tennis and running injuries. He is a founding member of Epworth Sports and Exercise Medicine Group.

Position: Cardiologist & Chair, Cardiac Sciences Clinical Institute

Associate Professor Ron Dick is the Chairman of Cardiac Services Clinical Institute at Epworth HealthCare and the former Chair of Epworth’s Group Medical Advisory Council. He is an Honorary Cardiologist at the Alfred Hospital and Bendigo Healthcare Group.

His specialties and interests include interventional cardiology, management of acute coronary syndrome including myocardial infarction, cardiogenic shock, clinical research and medical education.


Dr Caroline Dowling has had a long term career interest in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery in both simple and video-urodynamic studies, as well as diagnosis and surgical management of incontinence and prolapse.

As well as practicing, she is the co-author of book chapters and several journal publications across her field, assisted research in urogynaecology, and has spent time as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Surgery at Monash University.

Dr Dowling has a special interest in incontinence, prolapse and pelvic floor dysfunction, neurourology and urodynamics and general urology.

Mr Tom Hallahan is an experienced Intensive Care Nurse, ALS instructor and Simulation Coordinator at Epworth HealthCare.

Tom has broad experience in providing clinical skills and simulation sessions to all health professionals in a safe, supportive and interactive manner.


Dr Tim Hucker is a Pain Specialist / Anaesthetist who has a special interest in Interventional pain management for all aspects of axial pain, Neuropathic pain, prevention of acute to chronic pain and cancer pain and its management.

Tim completed his Undergraduate and Postgraduate Training in the United Kingdom and has been Anaesthetics Fellow at the Alfred Hospital since 2011, obtaining FANZCA and being Principal Anaesthetics Fellow.


Dr Robin Hunter is a Rehabilitation Physician with a special interest in musculoskeletal medicine. She has particular experience in geriatric medicine and Department of Veterans' Affairs medico legal assessments.

Dr Hunter's professional associations include the Australasian College of Rehabilitation Medicine and the Australasian and New Zealand Society of Geriatric Medicine.

Dr Chatura Jayasekera is a gastroenterologist who has a specialised interest in Barrett’s oesophagus and small bowel double balloon enteroscopy and is involved in a number of research projects.

Dr Jayasekera's Professional Associations include Gastroenterology Society of Australia (GESA), Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) and American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE).

Mr Christian Kenfield is a highly qualified Australian General Surgeon.

His particular interests are Hepatobiliary, Pancreatic and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery and Advanced Laparoscopy. He has been extensively trained in Metabolic/Bariatric Surgery (predominantly Sleeve Gastrectomy, Roux en Y Gastric Bypass and revisional surgery).

He is currently appointed as visiting Hepatobiliary/Trauma Surgeon at The Royal Melbourne Hospital and has public appointments at The Royal Women's Hospital, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and is a serving member of The Royal Australian Army Medical Core (Reserves). He operates privately at Epworth Freemasons and Epworth Richmond.

Mr Dennis King is a Urologic Surgeon trained in all aspects of urology with a special interest in Prostate Cancer and Robotic Surgery, Kidney Cancer, Laparoscopic Renal surgery, Renal transplantation and General Urological conditions.

Mr King has extensive experience in prostate and kidney cancer with over 600 cases of da Vinci Robotic and Laparoscopic surgery for these conditions.

Position: Gynaecological Oncologist

Dr Julie Lamont is a Gynaecological Oncologist and a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

Julie is a graduate of the University of Otago, completing a Bachelor of Science in 1997 (double major - Biochemistry and Physiology) and a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 2001.

After completing her speciality training in obstetrics and gynaecology, she undertook subspecialty training in gynaecologic oncology, at both Monash Medical Centre and the Royal Womens Hospital in Melbourne. She is a certified gynaecologic oncologist (CGO) and will be inducted into the Australian Society of Gynaecologic Oncologists at the annual meeting in July 2013. Julie holds the public appointment of consultant gynaecologic oncologist at the Mercy Hospital for Women in Heidelberg.

Her practice includes the surgical and medical management of gynaecologic cancers; complex pelvic surgery for both malignant and benign disease; advanced laparoscopic surgery and management of patients with multiple comorbidities. She also manages gynaecologic dysplasia including treatment with laser ablation.

Julie is actively involved in the teaching and training of medical students and speciality registrars, and has a keen interest in both teaching and research.


Position: Urologist

A/Prof Nathan Lawrentschuk is a Urological Surgeon and Urologic Oncologist has a special interest in cancer high-risk surgery of the prostate, kidney, bladder and testis as well as being comfortable with active surveillance of many cancers where appropriate.

In addition to his additional specialised qualifications, Nathan also completed standard urological training of benign conditions such as benign prostate hyperplasia and kidney stones which he is also happy to treat.

Education and training: University of Melbourne MBBS 1996 then FRACS (urology) 2008 endorsed Society of Urologic Oncology 2 year fellowship 2008-10 at Princess Margaret Hospital Toronto Canada and PhD in kidney cancer, University of Melbourne awarded 2009.

Dr Sue-Ling Liew is a Cardiologist who specialises in cardiac arrhythmias and cardiac devices.

Her special interestes include General cardiology, Cardiac arrhythmias and Cardiac devices including Pacemakers, Defibrillators and Cardiac resynchronisation therapy.


Dr Iefan Lim is a General and Interventional Cardiologist. He graduated from the University of Tasmania with honors and his post-graduate training was undertaken at The Alfred Hospital, Melbourne.

In 2012 he completed a Fellowship in Coronary and Structural Intervention in Vancouver, Canada after being the inaugural Epworth-Bakken Interventional Cardiology Fellow.

He has a special interest in intravascular coronary lesion assessment as well as the management of minimally invasive transcutaneous aortic valve replacement.

Mr Cheng Hean Lo is a Plastic Surgeon who specialises in reconstructive surgery.

His special interests include Skin Cancer surgery and head and neck reconstruction surgery.

Mr Lo studied at the University of Melbourne.


Mr Su-Wen Loh is a General, Breast and Endocrine Surgeon.

Su-Wen has a specialised interest in benign and malignant breast diseases and thyroid and parathyroid disease.

Su-Wen holds professional associations with Royal Australian College of Surgeons, Breast Surgeons of Australia and New Zealand (Foundation Member), Australian Society for Breast Disease, Victorian Post - Graduate Medical Foundation, Austin Health Breast Service and Northern Health Breast Service.

Su-Wen considers it a privilege to care for patients. He enjoys a wide variety of work, particularly breast surgery, thyroid and minimally invasive parathyroid surgery, and laparoscopic hernia repairs.

Associate Professor Darren Mansfield is a respiratory, intensive care, general and sleep disorders physician.

He is the director of the Epworth Freemasons Sleep Centre, Dept Director Monash Lung and Sleep at Monash Health.

He has a PhD looking at the cardiopulmonary effects of obstructive sleep apnoea and continues to research in areas of sleepiness and models of care.

He continues to be active in teaching and training and is consortia director of physician training at Monash Health.

Dr Julie Miller is a specialist surgeon with specific expertise in endocrine surgery. Originally from the United States, she became a fully qualified surgeon in New York City before moving to Australia in 2001. She is a consultant surgeon at Royal Melbourne Hospital, Epworth Freemason’s, and a Clinical Sub-Dean for Surgical Education the University of Melbourne.

Dr. Miller serves on the Executive of the Endocrine Section of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. She is Head of the Thyroid and Endocrine tumour group of the Royal Melbourne Hospital, and directs the Thyroid Cancer Multidisciplinary Care Conference.

She has a special interest and expertise in minimally invasive parathyroid surgery, as well as thyroid cancer, and adrenal surgery.

In May 2011 Dr. Miller was the first surgeon in Victoria to perform a PRA (posterior retroperitoneoscopic adrenalectomy). This approach to the adrenal gland is relatively painless, so benefits the patient in terms of faster recovery. Most patients have no need for prescription pain tablets. The procedure was covered on ABC radio and in the Herald Sun newspaper.


A/Prof Declan Murphy is a Urologist & Director of Robotic Surgery, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and Associate Professor of Surgery, University of Melbourne

Declan is a uro-oncologist with a particular interest in prostate cancer and minimally-invasive surgery. He holds senior editorial roles in the major urology journals worldwide including the British Journal of Urology International where he is Associate Editor for Social Media.

Dr Bill Nimo is an Emergency Physician and Deputy Director of Epworth Richmond Emergency Department.

He has a special interest in retrieval medicine, toxinology, emergency medicine in developing countries and teaching.

He is the Deputy Director (Clinical) of the Australian Venom Research Unit (AVRU), a staff retrieval specialist for Care Flight Medical Queensland and a senior staff specialist at Sunshine Hospital Emergency Department.

Bill has worked at Epworth Emergency Department for 14 years.

Prof John Olver, MB,BS, M.D.(Melb), FAFRM (RACP), Consultant Physician in Rehabilitation Medicine, is Professor in Rehabilitation Medicine in the Department of Medicine at Monash University. He is Director of Rehabilitation at Epworth HealthCare where he is also Manager of the Epworth Rehabilitation Acquired Brain Injury Programme. In 2008 he was appointed as Chairman of the Clinical Institute of Rehabilitation, Psychiatry and Pain Management at Epworth HealthCare and in 2009 was appointed to the Victor Smorgon Chair of Rehabilitation Medicine, Epworth HealthCare and Monash University. He is Director of the Epworth Monash Rehabilitation Medicine Research Unit, the medical research arm of Epworth HealthCare Rehabilitation. Currently Professor Olver is co-supervising seven PhD/Masters projects within the Epworth Monash Rehabilitation Medicine Unit.

Professor Olver's main research interest and a focus of publication concerns the outcomes following traumatic brain injury, through an ongoing prospective long term outcome study conducted at Epworth Rehabilitation and now in its 25th year. He is more recently published in the area of adult spasticity. His doctoral thesis on balance deficits following traumatic brain injury was presented in 2000. He is on the editorial boards of one national and two international medical journals, is current President of the Asia Oceania Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine, a past-President of the Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine, a member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and is a member of the President’s Cabinet of the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine. Professor Olver is on the Council of the World Neurological Rehabilitation Federation (WFNR) and Convenor of the 2012 Melbourne WFNR Scientific Conference Committee.


Mr David Pan is a Urologist trained in all aspects of General Urology with a special interest in urologic cancer and minimally invasive procedures. After completing medical school and urologic training in Melbourne, David has completed a urologic oncology/robotic surgery fellowship at the University of Miami, Florida USA from 2011-2013.

David has also travelled extensively to other America hospitals, completing robotic courses at the University of Chicago and the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.

Rohan is an Australian trained orthopaedic surgeon with sub-specialty expertise in shoulder and knee surgery.

Rohan has a specialised interest in Arthroscopic surgery for sporting injuries, shoulder instability, rotator cuff tears, knee ligament injuries and Surgery for shoulder and knee arthritis.


Mr Daniel Robin is an orthopaedic surgeon who specialises in hip, pelvic and knee surgery.

His special interests include hip and pelvic surgery, knee surgery and orthopaedic trauma.

Daniel's qualificiations include an MBBS(Hons) from Monash University and MS (Orthopaedics) from University of Melbourne.

Dr Chris Russell is an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist whose specialised interest is in Obstetrics, Fertility and IVF and Laparoscopic Gyanecology.

Chris’ approach is all about continuity of care for his patients. For his fertility patients, he continues to take care of them right up until the birth of their child. For his pregnancy care patients, he limits his bookings to ensure that he can provide personalised care. He aims to perform as much of his own on call as possible. At a minimum, he does all his own on call Monday to Friday and is available most weekends.

Dr Sachithanandan completed her Bachelor of Medicine at Monash University and PhD at the University of Melbourne.

Dr Sachithanandan undertakes private practice and consulting at Epworth Richmond.

Nirupa’s areas of special interest include, Endocrine tumours and endocrine oncology, Endocrine effects of cancer treatment – late effects, General endocrinology – thyroid, adrenal, pituitary disorders and Parathyroid disease and osteoporosis.

Dr Joanne Smart is a Paediatric Allergist and Immunologist who has been involved in the care of children with allergic and immune disorders since 1998.

Dr Smart is actively involved in teaching the new generation of Paediatric Allergists and Immunologists as well as up-skilling community Paediatricians, GP’s and other allied health professionals in the management of the common childhood allergic disorders.

Joanne has been established in private Paediatric allergy practice since 2003 and has strived to create the first comprehensive paediatric service delivering first rate, evidence based care of the breadth of allergic and immune disorders in the private sector, including the administration of food and drug challenges and immunotherapy.

Prof Andrew Spencer is a Haematologist with experience in many haematological conditions including multiple myeloma, lymphoma, leukaemia’s, myelodysplastic syndromes, myeloproliferative disorders, iron metabolism and stem cell transplantation.

Andrew is currently a principal investigator for numerous trials, mainly involving multiple myeloma and lymphoma.

Andrew's current appointments and Professional Associations include Haematology Society of Australia & New Zealand, American Society of Haematology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, International Myeloma Society, European Myeloma Network and American Association of Cancer Research.


Dr Piyush Srivastava is a general cardiologist.

Piyush trained in cardiology at Austin Health with further subspecialty training in echocardiography and diabetic cardiovascular disease. He is a Senior Research Fellow at Melbourne University and Senior Lecturer at Monash University.

Piyush's area of special interest and ongoing research commitments are in valvular heart disease, heart failure, diabetic cardiovascular disease, diagnostic angiography and all aspects of non-invasive cardiac imaging including stress, trans thoracic & transoesophageal echocardiography and cardiac MRI/CT.

Dr Ron Sultana is an Emergency Physician and the Director of Emergency Medicine at Epworth HealthCare.

He has over ten years experience in Emergency Department management in the private sector.

Ron has special interests in progressing emergency medicine in the private sector, administration & health informatics, clinical decision-making & biostatistics, risk management, patient satisfaction & quality care, teaching undergraduate medical students & general practitioners and emergency medicine research.


Mr Guan Tay is an orthopaedic surgeon who specialises in hip and knee arthroplasty.

Mr Tay has special interest in hip and knee arthroplasty, knee arthroscopy and reconstructive surgery, patellofemoral instability and arthritis and sports injuries/fractures.


Professor Frank Thien is a Respiratory and Sleep Medicine Physician.

Prof Thien has a special interest in Asthma and allergies, COPD, interstitial lung disease, sleep disorders and lung cancer.

His professional associations include the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and Fellow of College of Chest Physicians.

Mr Dhan Thiruchelvam is an Upper GI, Obesity and Hepatic, Pancreatic and Biliary Surgeon.

Dhan's interests include Anti reflux surgery, Obesity Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy, Endoscopy and Laparoscopic hernia surgery.

Dhan holds fellowships from Box Hill Hospital, St Vinent's Hospital and Royal Infirmary Edinburgh and is a Senior Lecturer at University of Melbourne.


Dr Jill Tomlinson is a plastic, reconstructive and specialty hand surgeon. Jill specialises in hand and wrist services including wrist arthroscopy and percutaneous scaphoid fixation.

Her interests include skin cancer management, breast surgery, body contouring, facial and ear surgery, burns and scar management.


Dr Stephen Vaughan conducts a part-time practice as a Locum Consultant Physician in Haematology / Medical Oncology in various public and private clinics throughout Victoria, New South Wales and Tasmania. He has also worked as a consultant to the Health Insurance Commission on high-cost drugs and the Victorian DHS on Oncology IT.

Currently he is the part time chairman of the Epworth Cancer Institute.

Previous directorships include:-
Board Director of the Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute for 6 years and Chairman of Cell Therapies Pty Ltd.  He was Director of the Grampians Integrated Cancer Service (GICS) for 7 years which is part of the Victorian Government’s cancer program.

He also works as an expert witness in the areas of cancer, blood diseases and transfusion medicine.

Ms Tess Vawser is the Director of Clinical Education and Simulation at Epworth HealthCare. She has an extensive background in the establishment and management of hi fidelity simulation centres, the coordination and training of facilitators and program development. She has been involved in the design and implementation of national and state simulation based training programs along with extensive experience in the development and implementation of team based clinical skills and simulation programs to all health professionals.

Tess' main interest is in the provision of interprofessional learning experiences for all levels of health professionals especially through clinical skills and simulation

Tess comes from an Emergency Nursing background with Critical Care and Health Education qualifications along with being involved in GP education over the last 15 years.


Dr Nick Wilsmore is a Respiratory Physician trained in all aspects of Thoracic Medicine. 

Dr Wilsmore has a special interest in General Respiratory diseases - COPD, Asthma, Bronchiectasis, Cough, Sleep Apnoea and other sleep disorders, Lung Cancer diagnosis and staging, Interventional Bronchoscopy, including radial and linear EBUS and pleural disease, including ultrasound, tunnelled chest drains and medical thoracoscopy.
